Successful VBW musicals take China by storm
ELISABETH and REBECCA
Vereinigte Bühnen Wien is delighted to announce two German-language tours of its world-famous musical hits in China: ELISABETH and REBECCA, both written by Michael Kunze & Sylvester Levay, will be performed semi-staged and with a large orchestra in a total of 62 performances in renowned Chinese partner theatres of VBW in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou from August to December 2024.
It all starts with ELISABETH
Just a few weeks after the most successful German-language musical of all time was performed in three extraordinary concerts in front of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna - over 100,000 people have already seen the Schönbrunn version of the musical since 2019 - this celebrated semi-staged version will celebrate its grand premiere in China at the end of August. After ELISABETH in 2014 and the Viennese version of MOZART! in 2016, ELISABETH and REBECCA will be the third and fourth VBW productions to be staged in Shanghai in 2024. ELISABETH will then travel on to Beijing to the Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center and then to the Opera House in Guangzhou, where the final performance will take place on 30 September 2024 after a total of 33 performances.
The tour of the second successful VBW musical will then begin in November
REBECCA will celebrate its premiere in Shanghai on 5 November 2024 and can then also be seen in the VBW partner theatres in Beijing and Guangzhou in a total of 29 performances. The musical, which is based on the world-famous story by the famous novelist Daphne du Maurier, which was also made into a film by Alfred Hitchcock and Netflix, was first shown in Vienna's Raimund Theatre from 2022 to 2023 to sold-out audiences almost every day. This is the first time that REBECCA has been shown in China. Both productions will be staged by Gil Mehmert, who previously directed the ELISABETH concert at Schönbrunn.
The two productions will be produced by Lion International on behalf of the Shanghai Culture Square Theatre, Tianqiao Performings Arts Center Beijing and Guangzhou Operahouse. Lion International is part of Lion Entertainment, based in Copenhagen. Lion Entertainment is one of the largest commercial producers of musicals in Scandinavia, with productions playing in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and now also in China. In addition to several in-house developments, Lion Entertainment produces major international productions such as ‘Spamalot’, ‘Hairspray’, ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘The Bodyguard - The Musical’, ‘Pretty Woman’ and ‘Jersey Boys’.
