REBECCA in China
Only a few more weeks until the long-awaited Chinese premiere of REBECCA! Rehearsals have already begun, and the cast is now working intensively on the piece at the Ronacher.
The cast is looking forward to the premiere in Shanghai on 5 November 2024 and the following tour. Antonia Kalinowski and Mark Seibert (5-15 November 2024) and Arvid Assarsson will take on the leading roles of ‘Ich’ and ‘Maxim De Winter’ in the legendary musical thriller written by Michael Kunze & Sylvester Levay as part of the German-language China tour. Musical stars Annemieke van Dam (Mrs Danvers), Riccardo Greco (Jack Fawell), Katja Berg (Mrs Van Hopper), André Bauer (Frank Crawley), Carina Sandhaus (Beatrice) and Gerben Grimmius (Ben) will also be appearing in the production.
Well-known leading team for REBECCA China tour
The well-known leading team that brought the musical world success ELISABETH to the Chinese stage two months earlier is also responsible for the German-language China tour of REBECCA: Gil Mehmert is once again taking on the role of director, with Christoph Bönecker as musical director. The choreography is by Simon Eichenberger and the costumes are by Birgit Hutter. Michael Grundner is responsible for the lighting design, the video content design is by Michael Balgavy. Tom Strebel is responsible for the sound design, Britta Tönne is set design consultant.
Premiere in Shanghai & a total of 29 performances within the series
After the premiere in Shanghai, the play will be shown in the VBW partner theatres in Beijing and Guangzhou in a total of 29 performances. It is the first time that REBECCA has been shown in China. The production will be staged semi-staged with a large orchestra.
The musical, which is based on the world-famous story by the celebrated novelist Daphne du Maurier, which was also made into a film by Alfred Hitchcock and Netflix, was only shown at the Raimund Theater in Vienna from 2022 to 2023, to almost daily sold-out audiences.
The production is being produced by Lion International on behalf of the Shanghai Culture Square Theater, Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center and Guangzhou Opera House. Lion International is part of Lion Entertainment, based in Copenhagen. Lion Entertainment is one of Scandinavia's largest commercial musical theatre producers, with productions in Denmark, Norway and Sweden and now also in China. In addition to a number of in-house developments, Lion Entertainment produces major international productions such as ‘Spamalot’, ‘Hairspray’, ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘The Bodyguard - The Musical’, ‘Pretty Woman’ and ‘Jersey Boys’.
